In the new Blacktop Cowboys® Novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Hillbilly Rockstar strange bedfellows find common ground after the lights go down Flower child vegetarian and humanitarian Harlow Pratt and gruff and strapping cattle ranch foreman Hugh Pritchett have been taunting each other for years Hugh I had an oddly disconnected feeling for most of this book It was a combo of three things1 It reuires intimate knowledge of the back story for the secondary characters who take up a great deal of plot and page space I read the other books in the series but it was a while ago They are not fully alive to me any but the author is assuming they are and is assuming I have interest in them than I do I prefer a book series that is Movie Of The Week style with a focus on the new romance This is of a continuing episodic TV show where the story as a whole continues for all ongoing characters 2 Much of the plot takes place in ways that are not fully present for example we never even meet the bad guy we are just told about him while he remains firmly offstage We hear the two lovers telling each other about their past histories at length but there is less detail about the present aside from sex which I began to skip over too much of that in relation to actual relationship Plus there are some flashbacks which is my least favorite story telling tactic So there's a lot of explaining but little actual showing3 The ending felt rushed And several of the scenes during their time on the road were oddly emphasized For example there's a whole bunch of detail about an incredibly improbable erotic drinking fiesta cattle women indulge in But there's close to zero detail about the actual work that everyone does for 10 hours a day while on the road Here we have a vegetarian woman with zero relevant experience of rodeos or cattle work who has spent the majority of her life overseas and instead of seeing her reaction to dealing with the American heartland we get details of the shots she's doing with girlfriends when they party I just feel like this book as a whole needs to be pared editorially down to its bones with all this extraneous stuff removed from the drinking to the plot moppet crap with the kids to all the secondary characters from distant fathers to unloving ex wives And then put together again as a real focused story with true thought I think it would be a very different book if done properly Right now it's a hot messOh and I'm having trouble buying that the 6 foot 3 inch tall hero was 70 pounds overweight for a few years in his 20s Men like that who are tall and do physical labor for a living are skinny wth great metabolisms in their early 20sand it would take way than a handful of years on the road eating badly to gain that amount of weight
